Aim and contents: The aim of the short lecture course is to give an overview of the developments in contemporary Estonian literature from the beginning of the 1990s till the second decade of the 21st century. The trends, developments and peculiarities of Estonian literature during this period are examined. The emphasis is on the relations between literature and the changes in society, or in other words, on the autonomy and dependence of literature under different social conditions. Also several major Estonian authors and literary groups of the period are introduced.

Piret Viires is the professor of Estonian literature at Tallinn University.  She received PhD in Estonian literature from the University of Tartu in 2006. Her major areas of research are contemporary Estonian literature, postmodernism and post-postmodernism, the relations between literature and technology, digital literature. She has published a book “Postmodernism in Estonian Literary Culture” (2012, Peter Lang Verlag) and several articles. She has published also short stories and is the vice-chairperson of Estonian Writers’ Union.
